The Shaykh mentioned the evidence for the permissibility of shaking hands with each person in the gathering individually.

The Shaykh : Now, if Allah wills, I return to the topic of shaking hands — in the name of Allah, praise be to Allah — I asked earlier, when I presented the detail I mentioned, which is that if a person enters a gathering where there are people, the recommended practice is to greet them once, and this single greeting includes all those present. I said that if it is easy for him to shake hands with each individual among them, that is prescribed and is the best. It remained for me to mention the proof for this preference. The proof for that is two hadiths. The first hadith: It explains that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to shake hands with the group, and that is with the condition mentioned earlier, if it is easy for him to do so. One of the Companions, and I recall it was Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), said:
We did not meet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) except that he shook hands with us. ما لَقِيَنا رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم - إلا وصافَحَنا
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 44:117
, meaning we did not meet him except that he shook hands with us, and the meaning of "we did not meet him" is: whenever we met him, he shook hands with us. So, if there is a group and he greets them with a single greeting, and it is easy for him to shake hands with them one by one, he does so; because this noble Companion says:
We did not meet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) except that he shook hands with us. ما لَقِيَنا رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم - إلا وصافَحَنا
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 44:117
. The second hadith: It explains the virtue of this handshake, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No two Muslims meet and shake hands except that their sins fall off them, just as leaves fall from the tree in autumn. ما من مسلمين يلتقيان فيتصافحان إلا تحاتَّتْ عنهما ذنوبهما كما يتحاتُّ الورق من الشجر في الخريف
, do you know how the leaves fall when the wind blows? They rustle like this, and the tree remains bare of leaves. Thus, the Messenger (peace be upon him) compared the Muslim who shakes hands with a Muslim out of affection, not out of hypocrisy, not out of showing off, but out of love for the sake of Allah
Their sins fall off them, just as leaves fall from the tree in autumn. تحاتَّتْ عنهما ذنوبهما كما يتحاتُّ الورق عن الشجر في الخريف
. I have now finished conveying to you what came to my mind when I entered upon you and found this blessed gathering — if Allah wills.
