Question:
What is the meaning of this hadith from Sufyan ibn Asid—or ibn Asad—(may Allah be pleased with him), in which he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “A great betrayal is that you tell your brother a story that he believes to be true, while you are lying to him about it”?
Answer:
Yes, its meaning is clear in the prohibition of lying in speech; because this involves deceiving Muslims and committing the major sin of lying. Lying is among the major sins, and Allah the Exalted says: “Only those who do not believe in the verses of Allah fabricate lies, and it is they who are the liars” [Surah al-Nahl: 105]. And He, Glorified and Exalted is He, says: “We shall place the curse of Allah upon the liars” [Surah Al-Imran: 61]. Lying is also among the characteristics of the hypocrites, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is trusted, he betrays” [Narrated by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)]. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to use lying against his Muslim brother in order to deceive or trick him.
