Ruling on determining the qiblah using a compass
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q184: The questioner says: When we were on our study mission abroad, we used to pray according to the compass. Some of our brothers pointed out to us that we had deviated slightly from the qiblah, and they guided us, may Allah reward them with good, to the correct direction. What is the ruling on the prayers we performed before we knew the qiblah?
A184: The prayer is valid, if Allah wills. If the deviation from the qiblah is slight, it does not harm, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 342Sahih (Darussalam) This indicates that the intended direction is the one in which the Ka'bah is located. This applies to one who is absent from the Ka'bah. As for the one who sees it, he must face it directly and not turn away from it, neither to the right nor to the left. As for the one who is absent, he prays toward the direction in which the Ka'bah is, even if he deviates slightly; this does not harm. Your prayers are valid, and praise be to Allah.
A184: The prayer is valid, if Allah wills. If the deviation from the qiblah is slight, it does not harm, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
What is between the east and the west is Qiblah.
