The Ruling on Overtaking the Imam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q407: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on racing the imam in prayer? Does the prayer become invalid, and does he have to repeat it immediately?
A407: Racing the imam in prayer is forbidden; it is not permissible for the follower to race the imam in prayer. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The imam is appointed only to be followed; when he says "Allah is most great," say "Allah is most great" and do not say "Allah is most great" until he says "Allah is most great." When he bows; bow; and do not bow until he bows. And when he says "Allah listens to him who praise Him," say "O Allah, our Lord, to Thee be the praise."
