The Ruling on Criticizing People of Goodness and Righteousness
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q336: The questioner asks: What is the legal ruling regarding one who criticizes people of goodness and righteousness, and belittles their status and rank?
A336: This is hypocrisy, and this is the conduct of the hypocrites. Allah the Exalted said:[At-Tawbah 9:79], so it is not permissible
to belittle the believers, nor to disparage the Muslims; rather, it is obligatory to love them and praise them. If you see a deficiency in someone, you should advise him, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, without engaging in backbiting, talebearing, belittling, or mocking. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Humazah 104:1], and He the Exalted said: [Al-Mutaffifin 83:29-31], up to His saying: [Al-Mutaffifin 83:34-36], and He the Exalted and Majestic said: [Al-Hujurat 49:11], meaning that
some of you should not mock others.[Al-Hujurat 49:11] Allah called this open sinfulness that diminishes faith, then He the Exalted said: , calling it oppression and commanding repentance from it.
A336: This is hypocrisy, and this is the conduct of the hypocrites. Allah the Exalted said:
Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.
الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لاَ يَجِدُونَ إِلاَّ جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌto belittle the believers, nor to disparage the Muslims; rather, it is obligatory to love them and praise them. If you see a deficiency in someone, you should advise him, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, without engaging in backbiting, talebearing, belittling, or mocking. Allah the Exalted said:
Woe to every scorner and mocker
(29) Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. (30) And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances. (31) And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
(34) So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers, (35) On adorned couches, observing. (36) Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

And whoever does not repent, then those are the wrongdoers.
