The sisters who used the initials A.A.A-A-M.M.M from al-Majma' in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia say in their question: If we try to prevent talebearing and backbiting among people, the one we enjoin good and forbid evil upon curses us and becomes angry with us. Do we bear sin because of his anger, even if it is one of the parents? Should we prevent them, or should we leave what does not concern us in this important matter? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: Among the most important obligations is enjoining good and forbidding evil, as He the Exalted said:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrongوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ
[Surah al-Tawbah: 71]. Thus, He the Exalted clarified in this verse that enjoining good and forbidding evil is a mandatory attribute of the believing men and women. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: :
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.
[Surah Al-Imran: 110]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.
Sahih Muslim 49a
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. The verses and hadiths regarding the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil, and the condemnation of those who neglect it, are numerous.
Therefore, it is obligatory for you and for every believing man and woman to enjoin good and forbid evil, even if the one you admonish becomes angry with you or curses you; patience is necessary, following the example of the Messengers (peace be upon them) and their followers with excellence, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said, addressing His Prophet: :
So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers
[Surah Al-Hijr: 35]. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
[Surah Al-Anfal: 46]. And He the Exalted mentioned regarding Luqman the Wise that he said to his son:
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
[Surah Luqman: 17].
There is no doubt that the rectitude and stability of society are achieved through Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and then through enjoining good and forbidding evil. And its corruption, fragmentation, and exposure to general punishment are caused, among the greatest of its causes, by neglecting enjoining good and forbidding evil. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
lf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.
Musnad Ahmad 1Sahih (Darussalam)
. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has warned His servants against the conduct of the disbelievers among the Children of Israel in His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): :
(78) Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed. (79) They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.
[Surah Al-Ma'idah: 78-79]. So we ask Allah to guide all Muslims, rulers and ruled, to perform this obligation in the best manner, to rectify their conditions, and to protect everyone from the causes of His anger and retribution; indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive.
