The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16977 )
Q1: We have a farm that raises Dutch cattle, which are fed concentrated feed that causes them to grow to three times the size of local cattle within ten months. Does this suffice for the 'Id sacrifice, the sacrificial animal of the pilgrimage, and the sacrifice for a newborn, on behalf of seven people?
A: A cow is not acceptable for the 'Id sacrifice or the sacrificial animal of the pilgrimage until it has completed two years of age, and anything less than that is not acceptable, even if it has a lot of meat and fat. This is based on the report ofJabir ibn 'Abd Allah(may Allah be pleased with them both), who said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 2797Da'if (Al-Albani) It was narrated byMuslim, andal-Nawawisaid: (The scholars said: The mature animal is: the two-year-old of everything from camels, cows, and sheep, and above that. This is a clear statement that a one-year-old is not permissible from anything other than sheep in any situation, and this is a matter of consensus, as transmitted byal-Qadi 'Iyad) End of quote. And the mature animal is: the one that has reached two years of age. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Sacrifice only a full-grown animal unless it is difficult for you, in which case sacrifice a lamb.
