These actions are not valid. The questioner : Yes.

The questioner : Her second question states: My uncle was killed in the battle, and our grief over him reached such a point that we decided to visit his grave every Thursday and Friday, and we wore black for a period of thirty-five days. His family raised his grave above the ground. What is the ruling on these actions? Are they valid, or are they contrary to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger?

The Shaykh : These actions are not valid.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for a person, when struck by a calamity, to receive it with patience and the expectation of reward, because grief does not return anything of the divine decree. And Allah the Exalted said in the Qur'an:
(155) And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, (156) Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (157) Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
[Al-Baqarah 2:155-157]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to one of his daughters, when a child of hers had died, to the messenger she sent to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Tell her to be patient and to expect reward, for to Allah belongs what He has taken and what He has left, and everything with Him is by a specified term. مرها فلتصبر ولتحتسب، فإن لله ما أخذ، وله ما أبقى، وكل شيءٍ عنده بأجلٍ مسمى
So it is obligatory for you, O those who have lost a loved one, to be patient, to expect reward, and to supplicate for him with forgiveness and mercy, since he is a Muslim. And on this basis, your visiting his grave, or establishing this visit to his grave every Thursday and Friday, is not prescribed and should not be done. Likewise, your wearing black is from religious innovations, and displaying grief is similar to tearing one's clothes and striking one's cheeks, from which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disavowed the doer, where he said:
He is not one of us who tears his garments, strikes his cheeks, and cries with the cry of the Days of Ignorance. ليس منا من شق الجيوب، ولطم الخدود، ودعا بدعوى الجاهلية
Sunan Ibn Majah 1584Sahih (Darussalam)
Yes.

The questioner : As for the raised grave.

The Shaykh : And as for raising the grave, it is also contrary to the Sunnah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It must be leveled with the graves around it, if there are graves around it, or it must be lowered until it is like the usual graves, because 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Hayyaj al-Asadi "Shall I not send you with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me with? Do not leave any image but that you erase it, and do not leave any raised grave but that you level it".

The questioner : Yes, may Allah bless you.

The questioner : This is a question from the listener H H D from Syria.
