The questioner : If a person buys two sacrificial animals, intending one for the 'Id sacrifice and the other for meat, does he have to specify the one he will sacrifice by name, and is it not permissible for him to replace it with the other?

The Shaykh : No, it is not a condition.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : What is recommended is that he not specify it. It is recommended for a person not to specify the 'Id sacrifice until the time of slaughter, so that he remains free to replace or change it. When he intends to slaughter it, he says: "This is the 'Id sacrifice of so-and-so, or the 'Id sacrifice on my behalf and on behalf of my household, or on behalf of so-and-so who bequeathed it," or something similar.

The questioner : What if he did specify it?

The Shaykh : If he did specify it, it becomes designated.

The questioner : And it is not permissible for him to replace it.

The Shaykh : And once it is designated, the ruling of the 'Id sacrifice applies to it, and he must carry it out. Some scholars have mentioned that if he replaces it with a better one, there is no blame on him.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The questioner : This is a question from the listener M A K from the noble city of Makkah.
