I want to perform the sacrifice, but I want to buy the sheep now and raise it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says: I want to perform the sacrifice, but I want to buy the sheep now and raise it. If it gets sick, breaks a leg, or suffers from something that prevents it from being a valid sacrifice, should I sacrifice it or not, knowing that I am buying it now?

The Shaykh : The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) say: If you designate it and say, "This is my sacrifice," it becomes a sacrifice. If it is struck by illness or a broken leg, and you were the cause, then it is not valid. It is obligatory for you to buy a replacement, one like it or better. If you were not the cause, then it is valid. That is, if you were not the cause, it is valid. For this reason, we say: It is better for a person to be patient in designating it. He should buy it early, for example, in order to feed it better food, but he should not designate it. When the time for slaughter comes, he designates it and says: "O Allah, this is from You and for You, on my behalf and on behalf of my household." If he does not designate it, he benefits from an important advantage. If something happens and he wants to leave it and buy another, he may do so, because he did not designate it. Yes.
