Did it not become possible for her? Was it not the one in which Satan used to stand and take on forms for Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace be upon him)?

The questioner : Did it not become possible for her? Was it not the one in which Satan used to stand and take on forms for Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace be upon him)?

The Shaykh : There is a hadith regarding this, and Allah knows best about its authenticity. Even if we assume it is authentic, it does not mean that we should do it as Ibrahim did.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Do you not see that the sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwah originally began with Isma'il’s running between them after he was afflicted with hunger and thirst, to check if there was anyone around him? We, however, perform sa’y not for that purpose.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : We perform sa’y as an act of worship to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), humbling ourselves before Him and seeking His help, asking Him to forgive us and have mercy on us. Even if the original act of worship was a specific action, it is not necessary that it continues until the Day of Resurrection. Also, this sand—this sand in the first three rounds of the arrival tawaf, which is the first thing a person does upon arrival, whether it is the arrival tawaf or the tawaf of 'Umrah—its original purpose was that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did it to anger the polytheists. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived for the 'Umrah of al-Qada', they said, “People are coming to you who have been weakened by the fever of Yathrib.” So the original reason for its prescription was for that purpose. Nevertheless, we are doing it now not to anger the polytheists, because that has ceased.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : But the worship remains in it. This indicates to us that it is not necessary that because the original purpose of this specific act of the rites of pilgrimage was such, our performance of it now must be for the purpose for which it was originally prescribed.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : We return to the stoning of the pillars.
