The questioner : He says: I have performed the obligatory Hajj, and praise be to Allah. During the stoning of the pillars, the crowd was very heavy. I tried my best to hit the pillar with the pebbles, but some of the pebbles flew off despite my attempts and despite my throwing some of them again. Even the ones I threw again, some of them flew off. What is the ruling in this matter?

The Shaykh : The ruling in this matter is that it is not obligatory to hit the pillar.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Because these columns located in the basins of the jamarat are merely markers for the place of stoning. The obligatory requirement is that the pebbles fall into the basin itself. If they fall into the basin, that is what is obligatory, whether they settle in the basin or roll out of it. You should strive to get close to the basin so that you have certainty or a strong presumption that the pebbles fell into the basin. If you are certain, or if it is your strong presumption—because certainty may be difficult to achieve in this situation—that they fell into the basin, then that is sufficient. If some of the pebbles flew off and did not fall into the basin, there is no blame on you for taking from under your foot and throwing the remaining pebbles. Yes.
