Clarifying the Muslim's Position Regarding Religious Innovations
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q157: This questioner is Abdullah. He says: What is the Muslim's position regarding the people of religious innovation? And how does a Muslim remain a follower and not an innovator?
A157: The Muslim's position regarding the innovators: if they are scholars, he must disapprove of them, explain their religious innovation to them, and warn them against it. As for if they are common people, he should keep his distance from them and not sit with them, lest he be influenced by them and think that what they are doing is a recommended practice. Safety from religious innovations lies in a person holding fast to the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani) This is not possible except by learning the Sunnah, for the ignorant person cannot manage this. One must learn the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in order to hold fast to it and not fall into religious innovations.

You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
