Zakah on real estate whose ownership has been expropriated

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14640 )
Q: My father received compensation from the government for the expropriation of his property, which we have just received. It is for land that was expropriated more than fifteen years ago, and we did not know the value of this compensation until about two years ago, and we did not receive it until a few days ago. Is he obligated to pay zakah on this money, or is there a charity or charitable work
that is prescribed to be spent in the causes of righteousness? And if the answer is yes, what are the best of these areas?

A: There is no zakah on your father for the value of the real estate held by the government until he takes possession of it from them and a lunar year passes over it, starting from the day he takes possession of it; because your father had no ability to take possession of it whenever he wished regarding the past period before taking possession. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
