The Ruling on Zakah in Amounts Set Aside as Compensation for the Expropriation of Real Estate

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people ask about paying zakah on cash amounts that are set aside for them through the expropriation of real estate, knowing that they do not receive these amounts until years have passed since they were set aside. How is the zakah on these amounts?

A: For real estate whose ownership has been expropriated and whose value has been assessed, but whose owner has not been able to take possession of it for a reason not attributable to him, no zakah is due on it until he takes possession of its value and a new lunar year passes with it in his possession.
