The Meaning of the Hadith: Whoever Introduces a Good Practice in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q163: The questioner says: I hope you will clarify the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to itمن سَنَّ في الإسلام سنة حسنة، فله أجرها وأجر من عمل بها"
Sahih Muslim 1017a
?

A163: Whoever introduces a good practice, meaning: whoever revives a good practice, does not mean that he invents something that Allah and His Messenger did not prescribe, and calls it a good innovation. Rather, it means that he revives a neglected practice and reminds people of it; because this hadith has a context, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to itمن سن في الإسلام سنة حسنة، فله أجرها وأجر من عمل بها
Sahih Muslim 1017a
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this when he encouraged
charity in the presence of needy people, and a man came with a large amount of money and placed it before the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). When the people saw it, they followed one after another with their charity, so he became a good example for them. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to itمن سن في الإسلام سنة حسنة، فله أجرها وأجر من عمل بها
Sahih Muslim 1017a
, meaning: he revived a neglected practice, or one that had been abandoned.
