Borrowed money intended for trade: Is zakah due on it?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14842 )
Q: I have money that I borrowed from a person, and I have used it in trade. A lunar year or more has passed. Is it permissible for me to pay the zakah from my own money, since I am the one benefiting from it? I ask for your guidance.
A: Zakah is obligatory on the owner of the money in the currency he lent you, if it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah) on its own or when combined with other currency or trade goods. However, it is permissible for you to return to the person from whom you borrowed more than he lent you, without any condition. This is a form of good repayment. It is established from Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: It was narrated by the group except al-Bukhari . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) borrowed a camel, so when the camels of charity came, he ordered me to repay the man his camel. I said: I did not find among the camels anything but a choice, four-toothed she-camel. He said: Give it to him, for the best of people are those who are best in their repayment.
