Zakah of the borrower for the borrowed money: Does it fall under a loan that yields a benefit?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19065 )
Q: I borrowed from my father three years ago a sum of 100,000 riyals, as a benevolent loan. Throughout this period, I have been paying its zakah on behalf of my father from my own money, without any reduction in the amount mentioned. My father agreed to this action on my part. I ask you to inform me, may Allah reward you: Is there any sin on me for paying the zakah of that money on behalf of my father?
A: This action is not permissible; because it is a loan that yields a benefit, and every loan that yields a benefit is riba by the consensus of the scholars, and your father’s obligation is not discharged by
the zakah of this amount that is in your debt to him, so he must pay its zakah for the years mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
