Q: We intend to provide some kidney dialysis machines to some remote and distant areas, where patients there die on the way before reaching the nearest place where such machines are available, and where this work, with the will of Allah the Exalted, reduces deaths and preserves the lives of many of them. Is it permissible to establish these centers from wealth zakah, and is it considered part of the zakah, or not?
A: It is not permissible to spend zakah on this project or any other general charitable project; because the categories of zakah are limited to the eight categories mentioned in the noble verse, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Tawbah 9:60] ... the verse; because they do not fall under the categories specified in the noble verse, and this project can be funded from donations and recommended expenses from people of goodness and benevolence. May Allah guide you and assist you in all good.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
