Fatwa No. ( 20333 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, the Director of the Asir Branch of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Guidance and Dawah in Asir , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (2197) and date 21/3/1419 AH, accompanied by a letter from the honorable Shaykh Fahd ibn Saqr al-Mudra' , the judge at the Branch of the Diwan al-Mazalim in the Asir region, which stated the following: (One of my acquaintances told me about a phenomenon that has spread in some of the mosques in the center of ( Thu'aybah ), which consists of some people hanging a shroud on the minbar in front of the worshippers on a continuous basis. My informant clarified to me that the intention behind this is to take a lesson and to soften hearts. In fact, this is attention-grabbing, as I confirmed this matter myself and witnessed it in the main mosque in Thu'aybah , which prompted me to write to your eminence, considering you the competent authority,
to look into this from the perspective of Islamic law and the innovations that have no basis which may result from such scenes .
After the Committee studied the question, it answered that this mentioned act—namely, hanging a shroud in front of the worshippers with the intention of admonition—has no basis, and it is a bid'ah (religious innovation), and every bid'ah is misguidance. Admonition is to be done through the Book of Allah the Exalted and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, it is obligatory to prevent this act and remove it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
