Found a watch, wore it, and it broke
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q2: About three years ago, my younger sister found a watch on the road, so she took it and brought it home. I took it from her, and the watch looked attractive, so I took it and wore it on my wrist. I tell you frankly that I did not say or announce to people that a watch was lost, but I was happy with it. It did not last more than about a year before it developed a fault. Now it is out of order and cannot be repaired, and I am afraid of meeting Allah while it is in my trust. So I ask you for guidance?
A2: It was obligatory for you to describe the watch for a period of one year in the places where its owner might be found. Since you did not do that, and a period has passed in which it is no longer possible to find its owner, it is obligatory for you to give its value in charity while it was still intact and not broken, with the intention that the reward belongs to its owner, along with repentance to Allah the Exalted for what happened, and avoiding such an action in the future. And if you can
now find its owner, it is obligatory for you to search for him and hand over his right to him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
