Fatwa number ( 21678 )
Q: A treasury officer in a government entity had money stolen from him, and this money was public, and along with this public money was a specific amount belonging to one of the brothers, which he had left with the treasury officer as a trust, and both amounts were stolen. The employees collected donations for the treasury officer in an amount equal to the stolen sum: 1 - Is it permissible for him to take the donations to cover the loss? 2 - Is it permissible for the owner of the private money to take his amount from these collected donations?
A: There is no harm in collecting money from the generous in an amount equal to the stolen sum, and it is permissible for the owner of the private money to take his amount from it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
