Anger toward his wife, which resulted in zihar
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A disagreement occurred between me and my wife, and the subject of the disagreement has recurred several times. In a verbal altercation, I became extremely angry, to the point that I did not know what I was doing, so I said to her: “You are forbidden to me, like my mother and my sister.” I did not know what its ruling is in Islam, or that it is zihar.
A: What you uttered is considered zihar. If you wish to have intercourse with your wife from whom you have committed zihar, you must pay the expiation. It is, in order: freeing a slave; if you do not find one, then fasting for two consecutive months; if you are unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor people; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Mujadila 58:3]
[Al-Mujadila 58:4] . And your ignorance of the ruling of what you uttered does not exempt you from the expiation. As for anger, if it is so severe that you do not perceive or understand what you say or do—as you mentioned in your question—then you do not owe an expiation in this case. However, you must know that the fatwa is based on what is stated in the question, and Allah knows the secret and the open of the servant, so be cautious. And according to the later direction of His Eminence the Mufti, the aforementioned person was summoned and sworn that he was in a state of severe anger where he did not understand what he was doing or saying. After that, he was informed, according to the direction of His Eminence the Mufti as well, that he does not owe an expiation.

It is, in order: freeing a slave; if you do not find one, then fasting for two consecutive months; if you are unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor people; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
