Q: A man has date palms of various types, including Barani, Rabi'ah, Ka'imaz, and other varieties. The best and finest of them are the Barani dates. He says: "I pay zakah every year from the best dates, but not the Barani. As for the Barani, I do not give anything from them." Students of knowledge came to me and informed me that it is obligatory for me to give zakah from the Barani and from the others. I hope you will inform me of what is obligatory for me. May Allah reward you with good.

A: It is obligatory for you to give the zakat on the date palms you possess if their harvest reaches the nisab or more. You should give the zakat from the medium-grade variety, and if you give the zakat from each variety from that same variety, that is better.
