Zakah is obligatory on all saved wealth

Fatwa No. ( 14456 )
Q: I came to work in Saudi Arabia from 1983 CE until now. After we started working here, no one informed us about the zakah on wealth. I began depositing my savings in the bank until this year, when the amount reached 9,000 dollars plus 2,000 Egyptian pounds. This amount is for me to prepare my three daughters for marriage. My wife used to give zakat al-fitr and some money to help the poor according to her understanding every year. This year, I paid the zakah on the entire amount. However, what is required of me to compensate for the period from 1984 to 1989 CE, so that I may clear my conscience and attain Allah’s pleasure regarding this mistake? I ask that the required amount be paid in installments given my circumstances. My current salary is (1,980 riyals), and I underwent a surgical operation for my daughter this year which cost me (8,000) Egyptian pounds. I am awaiting your response to put my mind at ease. May Allah grant success. And peace be upon you.
A: Zakah is obligatory on all saved wealth if it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it. This is calculated every year by looking at the amount of money you have at the end of each year, then paying one-quarter of a tenth, which equals 2.5%. This is to be distributed to the eligible recipients, such as the poor and the needy, and those mentioned by Allah in the verse regarding the expenditures of zakah in Surat al-Tawbah.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
