Calling the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when digging the grave

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 16712 )
Q: In some of our villages, when digging graves, the people who dig the grave repeat a phrase. This phrase is the word (Muhammad, Muhammad) repeated until they finish digging the grave. And when we asked some of them what you intend with this phrase? They said: We seek help with it. And likewise, when burying the deceased, they say in a collective voice: (O Merciful, have mercy on us on the day we walk before You; the path is entirely to You). What is the ruling on these phrases?
A: First: Calling the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when digging the grave by repeating the word: (Muhammad, Muhammad) is not permissible; because that is seeking help from other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), if the one sought for help is dead, absent, or inanimate like an idol, tree, or stone. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said, guiding His servants to seek help from Him alone:
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]

, and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aidإذا استعنت فاستعن بالله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2516Hasan (Darussalam)
Second: Collective dhikr (remembrance of Allah) when carrying the funeral is a bid'ah (religious innovation), so it is not permissible to repeat the mentioned phrase; because that is not from the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is established from the hadith of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. Third: What is prescribed when burying the funeral is to say: (In the name of Allah and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah). As for repeating the phrase mentioned in the question, it is a bid'ah (religious innovation). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
