Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14282 )
Q: If I leave off the Witr prayer and the two rak'ahs of Fajr , is there a sin upon me? Please give us a ruling on this, may you be rewarded.
A: The Witr prayer and the two rak'ahs of Fajr are among the emphasized sunnahs, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave them off, whether in residence or in travel. It is incumbent upon the Muslim not to leave them off. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) was more particular about offering the two (optional) Rak'at at dawn than he was about offering any of the other optional prayers.لم يكن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم على شيء من النوافل أشد تعاهدًا منه على ركعتي الفجر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:258
, and Muslim narrated from her that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The two Rak'ah of Fajr are better than the world and what is in it.ركعتا الفجر خير من الدنيا وما فيها
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 416Sahih (Darussalam)
, and it is authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should observe Witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable.من خاف ألا يقوم من آخر الليل فليوتر أوله ومن طمع أن يقوم آخره فليوتر آخر الليل، فإن صلاة آخر الليل مشهودة وذلك أفضل
Sahih Muslim 755a
, and in the authentic collections, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
The most beloved prayer to the Prophet (ﷺ) was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. And whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) offered a prayer he used to offer it regularly .أحب الصلاة إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما دووم عليه وإن قلت، وكان إذا صلى صلاة داوم عليها
Sahih al-Bukhari 1970
, it is incumbent upon the Muslim to maintain these two prayers. If it happens that he leaves them off one day for an excuse, such as sleep, work, or something else, he does not commit a sin. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
