The questioner : There is a cemetery on the road to my family’s house, and my grandmother is buried there. So when I want to go to my family’s house, I pass by it without stopping. I recite al-Fatihah, Surat al-Ikhlas, and the two chapters of protection (al-Mu’awwidhatayn), and I greet the deceased in general and pray for them with mercy and forgiveness. Is there any sin on me for doing this, even though I do it while passing by, without any intention of visiting and without stopping?

The Shaykh : There is no sin on you for this if you greet the people of the graves and pray for them with mercy and forgiveness, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded:
Peace be upon you, abode of a people of faith, and we, if Allah wills, are to follow you. May Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone before and those who come after. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, and do not test us after them, and forgive us and them.
As for reciting al-Fatihah, al-Ikhlas, and other parts of the Qur’an, this is a religious innovation (bid'ah), so you should not do it; rather, avoid it. Greeting and the supplication mentioned in the Sunnah are sufficient. Yes.

The questioner : These are two questions sent by the listener Abdullah Muhammad al-Nahari, a Yemeni resident in Riyadh.
