Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q4: When we are in the cemetery and occupied with burying the deceased, the sheikhs and imams withdraw and recite Surah Yasin and Tabarak, as well as Surah al-Baqarah , the Verse of the Throne, the end of Surah al-Baqarah, the two protective surahs (al-Mu'awwidhatayn), al-Ikhlas, and al-Fatihah. Then they call for al-Fatihah, meaning: supplication. What is the ruling
on the religion regarding this? Did this come from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or the majority of Muslims, or is it an innovation?
A4: What these sheikhs and imams do by reciting those verses and some surahs during or after the burial of the deceased, all of this is among the religious innovations (bid'ah) that have no basis in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Had this been prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have explained it to his Ummah. Therefore, every Muslim must beware of this; because of the great harms it contains, and because it imitates the worship of graves by lingering at them with various forms of nearness. It is recommended (sunnah) to stand at the grave of the deceased after his burial and say: (O Allah, forgive Your servant so-and-so, and grant him steadfastness when questioned). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
