Q: We are graduate students at King Saud University, and we are studying the subject of educational policy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which includes training students in jihad. Some of my colleagues suggested that the word jihad be replaced with another; because of the impact this word has on the West and their fear of it, since it calls for killing and destruction.
A: Jihad in Islam is a fixed legal term established by the Book and the Sunnah, and it has its own rulings related to it. It is not permissible to change this name; because that is an encroachment on the Book and the Sunnah. Allah the Mighty and Majestic prescribed jihad for the Muslims to repel aggression and injustice from them, to spread goodness and justice on earth, and to remove the obstacles to their spread. It is obligatory to teach the rulings of jihad to Muslims and their children as they are established in the Book and the Sunnah and with the imams of the Salaf. This is something the people need, whether they are students or not, so that the love of jihad and preparation for it are planted in their hearts; to carry it out when its conditions are met, in defense of their religion and their homelands. It is not permissible to abolish the teaching of this obligation or to deviate from its name and its rulings because of the mistaken understanding of some non-Muslims that jihad calls for fighting and destruction, or because of the deviation of some Muslims in this obligation
from the guidance, and their intent is to destroy and demolish facilities and kill souls within the lands of Islam or outside them. That is a defective action, and Allah does not make the work of the corrupters successful.
