The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 20321 )
Q8: I was in prayer, and after I finished the prayer, I doubted whether I had added or subtracted. I stood up, and then while I was standing, the doubt left me. What should I do?
A8 : It is obligatory for the one praying, if he doubts in his prayer, to build upon certainty, which is the lesser amount. So if he doubts whether he prayed three or four rak'ahs, he makes it three and performs the fourth, then he prostrates for forgetfulness, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): , narrated by Muslim . As for if one of the two matters, whether it was a subtraction or completion, prevails in his opinion, he builds upon what prevails in his opinion and completes what remains of his prayer, then he says the taslim, then he prostrates two prostrations for forgetfulness after the taslim, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 572a , narrated by al-Bukhari . As for doubt after the prayer, it is not attended to and it does not affect the validity of the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

If one of you doubts in his prayer and does not know how many he prayed, three or four, let him discard the doubt and build upon what he is certain of, then let him prostrate two prostrations before he says the taslim. If he had prayed five, they would have made his prayer even, and if he had prayed the full amount, they would be a humiliation for Satan.
إذا شك في صلاته فلم يدر كم صلى ثلاثًا أم أربعًا فليطرح الشك وليبن على ما استيقن ثم ليسجد سجدتين قبل أن يسلم، فإن كان صلى خمسًا شفعن له صلاته، وإن كان صلى تمامًا كانتا ترغيمًا للشيطانand when any one of you is in doubt about his prayer. he should aim at what Is correct. and complete his prayer in that respect and then make two prostrations.
إذا شك أحدكم في صلاته فليتحر الصواب فليتم عليه ثم يسلم ثم يسجد سجدتين بعد السلام
