The Ruling on the Supplication of Qunut

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of the fatwa number ( 18891 )
Q 5: What is the ruling on the supplication of qunut?
A 5 : The supplication of qunut has three states: The first state : Qunut in the witr prayer, and this is recommended; due to the hadith of al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said:
God’s Messenger taught me some words to say when standing in supplication during the witr . They were, “O God, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and exalted art Thou, our Lord.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 1273
It was narrated by Ahmad and the people of the Sunan, and al-Tirmidhi graded it as good. The second state : Qunut in times of calamity, whether it is a supplication for a group of Muslims or against a group of disbelievers, and this qunut is prescribed, as it is established from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
observed Qunut for a month in the dawn prayer after ruku' and invoked curse uponقنت شهرًا بعد الركوع في صلاة الفجر يدعو على رعل وذكوان
Sahih Muslim 677d
It is agreed upon as authentic. The third state : Qunut in the Fajr prayer permanently, and this is an innovated practice; as it is established
From Sa'd ibn Tariq al-Ash'aji, who said: I said to my father: O my father, you prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, and 'Ali here in Kufa for about five years. Did they perform qunut in the Fajr prayer? He said: (O my son, it is an innovation).
It was narrated by Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah , and al-Tirmidhi graded it as authentic. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
