Fatwa No. ( 13724 )
Q: What is the ruling on covering the sleeves of a suit during prayer, given that the reason is a military order? Please note that the suit sleeves are long and not short. We ask for clarification on what is disliked in prayer. Is covering the sleeves of a suit disliked in prayer? If it is disliked, do we follow the military order or the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Please note that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly stated this. What is the authenticity of the hadith narrated by Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 490b ?
A: It is not permissible for the one praying to cover his garment or the like during prayer; because of what
is established in the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih Muslim 490b And it is established in a narration from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:309 These hadiths are established and authentic, and scholars act upon them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
