Fatwa number ( 19109 )
Q: What is the reason that we say in bowing: (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) and in prostration: (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High)? And mention the evidence from the Sunnah?
A: The reason for the one who prays saying in his bowing: (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) and in his prostration: (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) is what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to say that in his prayer; as narrated by
Hudhaifa said that he prayed along with the Prophet and that he said when bowing, “Glory be to my mighty Lord”, and when prostrating himself, “Glory be to my most high Lord”حذيفة رضي الله عنه أنه صلى مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فكان يقول في ركوعه: (سبحان ربي العظيم) وفي سجوده: ( سبحان ربي الأعلى )
Mishkat al-Masabih 881
reported by Abu Dawud in (his Sunan), see (Awn al-Ma'bud vol. 5 p. 142), and reported by al-Nasa'i in (his Sunan) similarly, and as narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): that he said:
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.أما الركوع فعظموا فيه الرب وأما السجود فاجتهدوا في الدعاء فقمن أن يستجاب لكم
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
reported by Muslim in (his Sahih vol. 4 p. 196), and Imam Ahmad reported similarly in (al-Musnad vol. 1 p. 155, 219), and as narrated by 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
When "Glorify the name of your mighty Lord" was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Use it when bowing, and when "Glorify the name of your most high Lord" was revealed, he said: Use it when prostrating yourself.
Sunan Abi Dawud 869Da'if (Al-Albani)
reported by Abu Dawud in
(his Sunan vol. 5 p. 140), and Imam Ahmad reported similarly in (al-Musnad). So the supplications that are said in prayer are matters of divine prescription that are not said except with evidence from the Book or the Sunnah. We may understand the wisdom behind them or some of it, and the wisdom may be something that Allah has kept to Himself. But the person who is bowing to Allah, humble and reverent to Him in the state of bowing, it is appropriate that he glorify Allah, purify Him, praise Him, magnify Him, and feel the greatness of standing before Him by saying: (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent). He is the Magnificent to whom necks have bowed and submitted in submission to His might. So when he prostrates, the saying of the one who prays: (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) is in the most fitting state. For when the one who prays is in the state of prostration, he places the most noble thing in him, which is his face and nose, on the ground, and he is in the most humble state to his Lord in submission, humility, and reverence to his Lord, and he is at the closest point to his Lord. It is fitting that he say while in this state: (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
