The second question of Fatwa No. ( 16684 )
Q 2: I prayed behind an imam in the tarawih prayer in Ramadan, and in one of the first rak'ahs he recited from Surat al-Mutaffifin this verse:[Al-Mutaffifin 83:7-8]So he said, "Inscribed, witnessed by the nearest ones," whereas the original in the verse is:[At-Tur 52:11]Then he bowed, and while in the bowing position, he remembered his mistake because no one had corrected him, so he remembered it on his own. He rose from the bowing, turned to the ma'mum (those praying behind him), and said to them: "The rak'ah is invalid because I changed the meaning of the Qur'an drastically." Then he said Allahu Akbar, repeated the rak'ah, and completed the prayer. A- What is the validity of this imam's statement regarding the invalidity of the rak'ah?
B- What is obligatory for him to do if it is actually invalid?
A 2: If it is as mentioned, then what occurred from the imam in the recitation was a mistake and forgetfulness, and Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has lifted the sin from this Ummah in that regard, and the prayer is valid and repetition is not obligatory if such a thing occurs from the imam or others among the worshippers; rather, he should complete his prayer; for the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):[Al-Baqarah 2:286] the verse, and it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:878 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
Q 2: I prayed behind an imam in the tarawih prayer in Ramadan, and in one of the first rak'ahs he recited from Surat al-Mutaffifin this verse:
(7) No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen. (8) And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
كَلا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ (7) وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ (8) كِتَابٌ مَرْقُومٌThen woe, that Day, to the deniers,
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَB- What is obligatory for him to do if it is actually invalid?
A 2: If it is as mentioned, then what occurred from the imam in the recitation was a mistake and forgetfulness, and Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has lifted the sin from this Ummah in that regard, and the prayer is valid and repetition is not obligatory if such a thing occurs from the imam or others among the worshippers; rather, he should complete his prayer; for the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred.
رَبَّنَا لاَ تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَاThat Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: I have done it.
أن الله سبحانه قال: قد فعلت
