The Ablution for the Funeral Prayer: Can the Obligatory Prayer Be Performed with It?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 14683 )
Q: One day, we went to attend the funeral procession of a man who had passed away. We entered the mosque to perform the funeral prayer, so we performed the ablution and prayed over the deceased, then buried him and returned from the funeral procession. The time for the sunset prayer had arrived, so we entered the mosque to perform the sunset prayer. Someone said: Whoever was in the funeral procession should perform a new ablution, because the ablution for the funeral prayer is not valid for the obligatory prayer. Some of us opposed this opinion, while others agreed with it. Is this statement correct or not? Please inform us about this matter in detail. Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
A: It is permissible for one who has performed ablution for other than the obligatory prayer to perform the obligatory prayer with that ablution. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
