Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner: the Acting Director General of the Department of Religious Affairs of the Armed Forces, Abdullah ibn Saleh Al-Sheikh , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (4904) and date 12/8/1425 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows: We are attaching a copy of a letter from the Commander of King Abdulaziz
Military Academy, number (3/9/A/2533) and date 22/7/1425 AH, in which he requests permission to perform the Friday prayer in the students' mosque. They mentioned that there is a cohort of new students, numbering three hundred students along with the rotating personnel attached to them, who have come from various areas. The mosque where they pray is approximately one thousand meters away from the academy's main mosque. These students will remain at the academy for a period of one and a half months, during which there will be six Fridays. The transfer of the students from their mosque to the academy's main mosque involves hardship due to security obligations and the necessity of accompanying a large number of them to prevent any errors on their part or disorder, which makes the matter a great hardship for the academy. We hope that Your Eminence will graciously issue a fatwa for them on whether it is permissible for the students to perform the Friday prayer in their mosque during this period, and after its end, the Friday prayer is suspended except for the obligatory prayers, or do they perform them as the midday prayer? And peace be upon you.
After the Committee's study of the inquiry, it answered that it is not permissible to perform the Friday prayer in the aforementioned mosque; because one of the conditions for the validity of the Friday prayer is permanent residence in the place, and these students are not permanent residents, but rather they came only for study and then they will leave. However, whoever among them is able to perform the Friday prayer in the nearby main mosque, it is valid for him following the others, and whoever is not able to do so, he performs the midday prayer in
his place of work.
