Q: Your Eminence: We are writing to you to inquire about a matter that the Muslim communityin the city of (Gilliac) in France. On the night of the twenty-seventh of Ramadan 1994 CE, the Muslim committee decided to close the mosque after a misunderstanding occurred between us and them, and the matter remained in that state until the Festival of Sacrifice, when the mosque was reopened and the festival prayer was performed in it. After about three months, the group that had separated from the mosque decided to rent a hall to perform the five daily prayers. A few days later, a permanent imam came to the main mosque and contacted us, asking us to return to the mosque, and he pledged to be fair to us and to the group alike. However, despite all these attempts, we did not return to the mosque, knowing that it does not fill up to a quarter of its capacity, with no more than (40) people, and the mosque's area is sufficient for more than one hundred people. Shortly after this, we brought in a man to lead us in the prayers and the Friday prayer in the place we had rented,
and after a period of time, it became clear that the man we had brought writes what he calls: "Healing for People," and he takes a large fee for it. Question: Is it permissibleto pray behind this man who writes amulets and talismans, and is it permissible to perform the Friday prayer in this place we rented, despite the existence of the main mosque and its not being full on Friday, knowing that many people are still demanding that we return to the main mosque, and may peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you.
A : You must gather in the mosque to perform the five daily prayers and the Friday prayer as much as possible; because the religion of Islam encourages unity of word and performing prayers in congregation. As for the imam who writes amulets, if he writes them from the Qur'an and the prescribed supplications, then the prayer behind him is valid, but it is advised to stop writing these amulets; because the correct view is that they are not permissible. And if what he writes in these amulets consists of words of shirk (associating partners with Allah) or unknown words, then it is not permissible to pray behind him, and it is not permissible to leave him as the imam of the mosque; rather, you must strive to remove him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
