The Gift to the Family of the Deceased
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16842 )
Q 1: My father and my maternal uncle (may Allah have mercy on them both with a vast mercy) have passed away. Among the customs of the women in our area is that women come to offer condolences, bringing with them some coffee beans and some money, which they give to the women of the deceased. It happened that some women from neighboring villages brought some coffee beans and money and gave them to my mother. This was seven years ago, and my mother no longer remembers which of them came to her, as she is advanced in age and cannot return those items to their owners. She wants to clear her conscience of the rights of people. What should she do to clear her conscience, and is this practice permissible or is it an innovation? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.
A 1 : Offering condolences is prescribed by making du'a for the deceased and his family, comforting the family of the deceased, advising them to be patient and seek reward from Allah, and preparing food for them without extravagance or ostentation. If what the aforementioned women brought was in the form of a gift and consolation, then there is nothing wrong with it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
