Q: We are teachers in Ta'if , and Allah decreed the death of a colleague's father. Some of us, in the spirit of cooperating in good and consoling the family of the deceased, based on the hadith:Sunan Abi Dawud 3132Hasan (Al-Albani) decided to prepare a dinner for the family of the deceased. We collected some money for this purpose and entrusted some colleagues with preparing the food, taking it to the family, placing it in their own dishes, and serving it to them without burdening the family in the dining rooms or inviting people who are not part of the family. After the family shared the dinner, the colleagues collected the dishes and trays immediately and left the place. They then gave the leftover food in charity to the poor. The next day, some colleagues condemned this action, claiming it was wailing (niyahah), citing the hadith of Jarir al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him): (We considered gathering at the family of the deceased after the burial to be wailing). A dispute arose over the issue, so we all decided to return to the people of knowledge regarding this. Is this action considered wailing, and is it not permissible for us to eat with the family of the deceased? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A : What you did in preparing food for the family of the deceased is a prescribed
recommended practice, but the food should be only as much as is sufficient for the family of the deceased, without extravagance in that; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam) There is no harm in your sharing the meal with the family of the deceased from the food you prepared and delivered to them, without the intention of gathering for that. Rather, what is to be avoided is for the family of the deceased to prepare food and invite people to gather for it; because that is wailing, due to the statement of Jarir ibn Abdullah: (We considered gathering at the family of the deceased and preparing food to be wailing). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
