The second question of Fatwa No. ( 16802 )
Q 2: It is common among us to set up tents and mourning gatherings when one of the living dies
The living, and the family of the deceased stand in the tent to receive the people who have come to console them in their loss. What is the opinion of the religion regarding this, and what is the formula of condolence found in the Sunnah ? What is the ruling on bringing reciters to read in this tent, and is it beneficial for the deceased? And what is the ruling on the fee that the reciter takes from the family of the deceased?
A 2 : Setting up tents and mourning gatherings for the deceased and hiring reciters is a forbidden religious innovation. The prescribed condolence is for the one offering condolences to say to the bereaved: “May Allah improve your consolation, recompense your loss, and forgive your deceased,” without setting up tents or incurring unnecessary expenses. Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “We used to consider gathering with the family of the deceased to be wailing.” It was narrated by Imam Ahmad with a sound chain. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
