Fatwa number ( 2707 )
Q: In my village, there is a custom whose ruling I do not know, and it continues to this day, and whoever abandons it is criticized for doing so. It is that after the death of the deceased, four or five days or otherwise, the heirs prepare a large feast called charity on behalf of the deceased. It is usually taken from the deceased's money, and some relatives are fed with some of it. Since there is much waste in it, in terms of the number of slaughtered animals and boasting about them, is this permissible or not? And if it is permissible, what is its nature?
A: It is not permissible for the family of the deceased to prepare food, whether from the heirs' money, from the deceased's bequest, or from a person who brings it to them, because this contradicts the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah narrated with a sound chain from 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far that he said: It was also narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr that he said: "So the Sunnah remained with us until those who abandoned it abandoned it." And Ahmad narrated with a good chain from Jarir ibn 'Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: . Likewise, limiting this to a period of four or five days or the like has no basis in the Shari'ah; rather, it is a religious innovation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
