The Ruling on Holding Funeral Gatherings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener Abdul Jalil Abbas Hamad, a Sudanese, says: In our funeral gatherings, the mourning lasts for nearly a month, and a great deal of money is spent during that time. Is this considered charity for the deceased, or is it wastefulness? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Holding funeral gatherings is not permissible. It is obligatory for the family of the deceased to be patient, to seek reward from Allah, and not to hold any funeral gathering; this is what is obligatory upon them. However, if their neighbors and relatives send them food, there is no harm in it. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he ordered his household to send food to the family of Ja'far when he was killed (may Allah be pleased with him) and news of his death reached him, he said:
For it may be that something has come to them that occupies themفإنه قد أتاهم ما يشغلهم
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 8:37
.
So there is no harm if food comes to them that they invite their neighbors and those around them to it, and eat with them; because it is a lot; so there is no harm in inviting those who will eat with them. As for them preparing food for people themselves, this is not permissible. This is part of the funeral gathering that is prohibited from. Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) ibn Abdullah, the noble Companion, said:
We used to consider gathering at the house of the deceased, and preparing food after the burial, to be part of wailingكنا نعد الاجتماع إلى أهل الميت، وصنعة الطعام بعد الدفن من النياحة
and wailing is prohibited.
So it is obligatory for Muslims to adhere to the religious command and not to create the food gatherings that the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to do, which are considered part of wailing. But it is recommended for their neighbors and relatives to send them food; for it may be that something has come to them that occupies them. And if the food is a lot, and they invite those who will eat with them; there is no harm.
