The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18898 )
Q 1: What is the ruling on drinking coffee or eating something when visiting the sick or at a funeral?
A 1: It is permissible for a visitor to eat something or drink coffee while visiting the sick, and this does not detract from the reward of the visit, provided it does not cause embarrassment to the patient, especially if the patient desires it. As for eating and drinking coffee or the like with the deceased's family when visiting them to offer condolences, if the family intends to prepare feasts and invite people to them, it is not permissible to eat any of it; because preparing food by the deceased's family and inviting people to it is part of wailing; due to the hadith of Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Bajali who said: (We used to consider gathering with the deceased's family and preparing food after his burial to be part of wailing), narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (Vol. 2, p. 204) , and by Ibn Majah in his Sunan in the Book of Funerals with a sound chain. If they did not intend that, or if the food was prepared by others, there is no harm in eating and drinking, and this does not diminish the reward of the condolences. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
