The funeral prayer in the cemetery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17625 )
Q 1: What is the ruling on praying — the funeral prayer — in the cemetery? And if it is not permissible, what about the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he prayed over the woman who used to clean the mosque in the cemetery?
A 1 : If one misses the prayer over the deceased, it is recommended for him to pray over his grave
for a period of one month, with the deceased between him and the qiblah. In the authentic hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
Abu Huraira said that a negress (or a youth) used to sweep the mosque. God’s messenger missed her, and when he asked about her (or him) the people told him he had died. He asked why they had not informed him, and it appeared as if they had treated her (or him) as of little account. He asked the people to lead him to the grave, and when they did so he prayed over her (The wording of this tradition causes some difficulty owing to the indefiniteness as to whether the person was a man or a woman. Sometimes the alternative is mentioned, as in the translation, but sometimes merely the masculine singular pronoun and at others merely the feminine singular pronoun is used) and then said, "These graves are full of darkness for their occupants, but God will illuminate them for them by reason of my prayer over them.” (Bukhari and Muslim, the wording being Muslim’s.)أن امرأة سوداء كانت تقم المسجد، أو شابًّا، ففقدها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فسأل عنها أو عنه، فقالوا: ماتت، قال: أفلا آذنتموني قال: فكأنهم صغروا أمرها أو أمره، فقال: دلوني على قبرها فدلوه فصلى عليه، ثم قال: إن هذه القبور مملوءة ظلمة على أهلها، وإن الله عز وجل ينورها لهم بصلاتي عليهم
Mishkat al-Masabih 1659
, Imam Ahmad said: “And who doubts the prayer over the grave?! It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from six angles, all of which are good.” End of quote. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer over the grave after burial is of the category of authentic, mass-transmitted reports. It is reported from the hadith of Ibn Abbas and Abu Hurayrah and Anas ibn Malik and Yazid ibn Thabit , the brother of Zayd ibn Thabit , and Amir ibn Rabi'ah and Jabir ibn Abdullah and Buraydah ibn al-Husayb and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Umamah ibn Sahl (may Allah be pleased with them). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
