Q: A person died while owing many debts, and the attendees brought his funeral to the imam to pray over it, but he refused to pray over it because the person was owing debts, and no one came forward to transfer the debts to him. Then they buried him in the grave without praying over him. It is known that the hadith narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is: Is it permissible to pray over a deceased person who is owing debts, and what is the ruling on that?
A : Praying over the funeral of a Muslim is obligatory, whether he is owing debts or not. Leaving off the prayer over a debtor is specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); because he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only left off praying over the debtor initially when he was unable to bear the debts of the deceased who were in financial difficulty. When Allah made things easy for him, he began to bear them on their behalf and pray over them, peace and blessings be upon him. So the conclusion is that it is not permissible to leave a deceased Muslim without praying over him on account of debt; rather, this was specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a specific situation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
