What is the authenticity of the hadith that says, “A son and what he owns belong to his father”?

The questioner : Her second question asks: What is the authenticity of the hadith that says “A son and what he owns belong to his father”? This husband of yours compels one of his sons to give him money, despite his open sinfulness and immorality. How is it that the son toils and struggles to gather money, only to give it to a father like this, who spends it on forbidden things and distributes it among his remaining brothers, inciting them against their brother until he has planted hatred and enmity between them? Is this son obligated to give his father his money or any part of it in this state, or not?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what you mentioned regarding the hadith, which is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
You and your wealth belong to your father أنت ومالك لأبيك
, it is a hadith that serves as a proof. Therefore, the scholars said that a father has the right to take from his son’s wealth what does not harm the son and what the son does not need. As for what the son needs, or what would harm the son, the father has no right to take it. Likewise, if the father takes it from him to spend it on forbidden matters, that is forbidden for him, and he has no right to it. This is because the father—meaning the father—does not have the right to spend his own money in disobedience to Allah, so how can he do so with his son’s money? Based on this, we advise this father to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in his son, in his family, and indeed in himself. He should turn back to Allah, repent to Him, and devote himself to his prayers and his worship, so that he may meet Allah the Exalted as a believer. We ask Allah for well-being and safety from all evils.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This listener, Abd al-Salam Ahmad Salim from Khamis Mushayt, sent a message containing two questions.
