Q 1 - What is the distance at which a traveler shortens his prayer from the city in which he resides? 2- Is it permissible for me to combine and shorten prayers while traveling between Jeddah and Ta'if ? 3- If I hear the call to prayer while I am a traveler and I am on the outskirts of the city, is it permissible to combine and shorten in this case between Dhuhr and Asr, or do I pray Dhuhr in full? And if I am traveling from Ta'if to Jeddah and the Maghrib prayer catches up with me in Ta'if and I pray it with the congregation in the mosque, is it permissible for me to combine Isha immediately after it because I am a traveler, and is it permissible for me to combine and shorten while traveling if the purpose is only for a stroll and a walk? And if I travel to Jeddah and I am a resident of Ta'if with the intention of reviewing a transaction there, and the Dhuhr prayer time arrives and I pray it with the imam, is it permissible for me to combine Asr with shortening it because I do not intend to stay in Jeddah ?
A: It is prescribed to shorten the four-rak'ah prayer in the case of travel that reaches a distance of approximately eighty kilometers, which is a two-day journey for a mount. The traveler from Jeddah to Ta'if shortens the prayer because the existence of the distance is established.
The aforementioned distance, except if he intends to reside during his travel for more than four days, in which case he completes the prayer, because the rulings of travel are severed for him. If he resumes his travel returning to his country, he shortens the prayer on the way. The rulings of travel, such as shortening and combining, begin when he leaves the inhabited area of the city in which he resides, even if he can hear the call to prayer while he is outside the city. If you are a traveler and you pray with residents in the city the Maghrib prayer or the Dhuhr prayer, it is permissible for you to pray the Isha prayer after Maghrib and the Asr prayer after the Dhuhr prayer as a combination. It is prescribed to shorten the prayer in travel even if the purpose is a stroll and a walk, due to the generality of the dispensation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his companions.
