A person obligated to perform a prayer following a person performing a voluntary prayer

Q: One day I was late for the Fajr prayer, so I went to the mosque but did not find a congregation to pray with. I found a man praying the Sunnah of Fajr, so I prayed behind him, and he did not recite aloud at all. Is this valid, or should he recite even if he is praying the Sunnah? And should I repeat the prayer because he did not recite?
A : There is nothing wrong with what you did; because it is permissible for a person obligated to perform a prayer to follow a person performing a voluntary prayer; because Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then go and lead his companions in the obligatory prayer, which was a voluntary prayer for him, even if he did not recite aloud, for reciting aloud is a recommended practice in the Fajr prayer and the night prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
