What is the ruling on the obligatory prayer being performed behind a voluntary prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling on the obligatory prayer being performed behind a voluntary prayer?

The Shaykh : The correct view is that it is permissible for one who is performing an obligatory prayer to pray behind one who is performing a voluntary prayer. The evidence for this is what is established in "al-Bukhari and Muslim" from Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to pray the night prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would go out to his people and pray that prayer with them. It was a voluntary prayer for him and an obligatory prayer for them. This action of Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was not criticized, neither by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) nor was a Qur'anic verse revealed that necessitates prohibiting it. This indicates that it is permissible.

The questioner : May Allah thank you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and make it beneficial.
